Research
My methodological research is focused on causal inference from longitudinal data. I combine observational data, mostly untestable assumptions, and statistical methods to simulate hypothetical randomized experiments. My collaborators and I are applying this methodology to the following research areas:
- optimal use of antiretroviral therapy in persons infected with HIV
- lifestyle and pharmacological causes of cardiovascular disease
- use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in dialysis patients
My substantive research is focused on the etiology of diseases of the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. I conduct this research in collaboration with investigators from Harvard University, the University of Minnesota, the Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program at Boston University, and the Spanish Centre for Pharmacoepidemiologic Research in Madrid.
