Dr. Jesse Bump joined the FXB Center in January 2008 as a Research Associate working on the service delivery component of the Joint Learning Initiative on Children and HIV/AIDS. His research interests include the application of historical tools to current public health problems in developing countries, community-directed programs, health system design, and health services delivery.
Dr. Bump has combined years of historical research on African colonial health systems with operational experience in modern international public health. He was a longtime member of the Onchocerciasis (River Blindness) Coordination Unit of the World Bank, where he worked to improve service delivery in the most remote parts of the sub-Sahara. His duties included project field evaluations, international advocacy, funds mobilization, and maintaining diplomatic relations with dozens of countries and partner organizations. He has consulted for the World Health Organization on strategic program management planning and for UNICEF on child injury in Asia .
Dr. Bump received his PhD from the Institute of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins and holds an undergraduate degree from Amherst College . He runs with the Boston Athletic Association, and studies the French, Italian, and Turkish languages as well as the preparation of fine food and drink.
