Work, Family and Democracy

The Work, Family, and Democracy initiative focuses on how local and national governments respond to the impact of dramatic demographic transitions in the labor force on families, neighborhoods, communities, and a democratic society. Over the course of three years, with the support of the Johnson Foundation and the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, the initiative, chaired by Dr. Jody Heymann and directed by Dr. Chris Beem, brought together academics and policymakers, individuals whose work is grounded in governmental, non-governmental, and private sector organizations. This exceptionally interdisciplinary group of leaders and scholars began to address the grave gaps that persist – to consider both new and existing policy ideas and also the strategy needed to make those ideas real. They contributed to the discussion from multiple perspectives including economics, political science, economics, history, religion, sociology, and public policy.

The products of this initiative include a report titled “Learning from the Past - Looking to the Future,” available from the Johnson Foundation at www.johnsonfdn.org and an edited volume titled Unfinished Work: Building Equality and Democracy in an Era of Working Families, released by The New Press in 2005.
