Health Promotion for Adult Literacy Students: An Empowering Approach

This package of materials includes nine subject-based curricula, each between 30 and 60 pages in length, a teacher’s guide, corresponding audio and video tapes and newsletters. The curricula is intended for use with ABE, ESOL or GED students who want to learn more about health, in areas such as: women’s health, alcohol and other drugs, child safety, health insurance, first aid and nutrition. One of the most helpful tools in the kit is the inclusion of glossaries for each topic as well as a list of organizations to contact for further information. Culture, Health and Literacy: A Guide to Health Education Materials for Adults with Limited English Literacy Skills
. This guide contains descriptions of health education materials addressing issues of culture and low-literacy, and includes references to curricula written in languages other than English. The guide is divided into the following sections: Background information; fact books, readers and stories; bibliographies and resource guides; curricula and workbooks; videos and audiocassettes; and web sites. Culture, Health and Literacy was designed as an addendum to the Health Literacy Compendium, developed by World Education in 1998 and is intended for health care practitioners working with patients with limited English literacy or adult literacy practitioners, particularly ESOL teachers, who want to incorporate health topics into their curriculum.
