Rosalie’s Neighborhood (Kit) Rosalie’s Neighborhood was created by the National Health and Education Consortium in 1997, by authors Carman, Van Horn and Grumm. This 3-part curriculum provides essential health information for parents and caregivers of children, in particular about preventive health, dental health and communicating with young children. The kit includes a guide for facilitators with overheads, activity sheets and guiding questions, copies of three stories (What is Preventive Health?, Why Do I Have to See the Dentist? and Let’s Talk), as well as immunization cards for the learners. The books are written at a 4th grade level, and are appropriate for ESOL and ABE classes or in health care settings with parents and caregivers having limited literacy skills. Health information is presented in a series of conversations among neighborhood residents, including Rosalie, a nurse’s aid and grandmother. The text is complemented by black and white illustrations. Rosalie’s Neighborhood is available free of charge from the National Institute for Literacy Clearinghouse; CEGA Services. Tel: (202) 632-1500.
