Families with at least one asthmatic children have been enrolled in the Interventions phase of the study. Apartment level interventions have focused on removing pests and allergens and infection control. A thorough industrial cleaning is conducted in participant's homes aimed at removing allergens. The cleaning is followed by an integrated pest management program. Children receive new mattresses and bedding, and air filtration devices are used in children's bedrooms. Arrangements are made to complete routine repairs that can be addressed by the existing BHA work order system. Families enrolled in the 15 month intervention program will also have ventilation equipment installed in their apartments. Building, or development wide improvements made during the study period, such as roof repairs, sealing of basements, and integrated pest management, will be documented in the places where they occur, and will be factored into our analyses when possible.
