Environmental Assessment Surveys

Public housing residents who were trained as community health advocates conducted surveys of environmental conditions at the West Broadway and Franklin Hill developments. The surveys focused on building conditions, thermal comfort, mold and moisture and child safety. The surveys also included some questions about the participant's health and their children's health.

Planned analyses include: comparing results at West Broadway from before and after the heating systems were upgraded; comparing current conditions at Franklin Hill with current conditions at West Broadway; investigating relationships between environmental conditions and health symptoms at both developments.

Health Outcomes

Each family enrolled in the Intervention phase of the study is assigned to a resident trained as a community health advocate, who meets regularly with the family and asks them questions designed to evaluate the health of children with asthma and the quality of life of both children and their caregivers. Surveys track medication use, doctor, and emergency room visits, and the impact of asthma on their daily lives. In addition, peak flow measurements and self-administered spirometry measurements are made twice a day for one week on alternate months.
