An expert in public health rights-based responses to humanitarian crises who has served on the boards of several humanitarian organizations, Leaning has experience on the ground in hotspots from Afghanistan to Somalia, giving her a unique perspective on the connection between human rights and public health.

VanRooyen has worked extensively in humanitarian assistance in more than 30 countries affected by war and disaster, including Somalia, Bosnia, Rwanda, Iraq, North Korea, Darfur-Chad and the Democratic Republic of Congo, both as a physician and a policy advisor with numerous relief organizations. His textbook, Emergency Field Medicine, is considered one of the key reference texts in this area.
