The
Politics and Governance Group is a group within the International
Health Systems Program of the Department
of Population and International Health. It provides
leadership and coordination for research, education and, technical
assistance in politics, policy, governance, and institutions. The
Politics and Governance Group currently supports three major components
of health system development and will be expanding into other areas:
- Political
and Policy Analysis for health system reform
- Decentralization
and State Reform in the health sector
- Development
of Social Capital in support of health objectives
The Politics
and Governance Group has been developed in response to the increasing
demand for expertise in political science and instituional development
in health systems research, training and technical assistance.
Dr.
Thomas Bossert is the Director of the Politics and
Governance Group. Dr. Bossert manages projects and provides direct
technical assistance to a growing number of projects and training
programs in this area. The Group has provided leadership in research
on decentralization and political policy analysis in Latin America,
Africa and Poland for USAID projects; institutional reform projects
in Colombia funded by the Inter-American
Development Bank; and training designed for the World
Bank Flagship Course in Health Reform and Sustainable Financing.
Current activities
in the Politics and Governance Group involve initiatives in technical
assistance and applied research on decentralization in Nicaragua
and Morocco; the impact of health reform policies on logistics and
supply systems in six countries; political feasibility analysis
for contraceptive security in El Salvador; programs to develop social
capital to promote community health activities in Nicaragua and
Morocco; and governance and institutional development of key health
organizations in India and Kosovo.
