Second Round of Website Issues

UPDATE: The IE8 issue has been resolved.

Beginning at approximately 12:00 am on October 25, HSPH began experiencing load balancer and server connectivity issues related to a faulty upgrade by our hosting vendor.

After work throughout the night, the HSPH website was restored at 6:50 am.

The HSPH web team and our vendors are continuing work on the site this morning to resolve a few remaining issues.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this outage caused.

Departmental Hours and Services on October 25

Because of the all-day HSPH Centennial Celebration tomorrow, October 25,  the Department of Information Technology will only be able to provide the following limited services:

Computer Support

Phone and email support only, technicians will not be able to be in the field for service requests.

Media Services
We will be unable to provide media services support for the day with the exception of the full slate of Centennial events.

Closure During Celebration

The IT Department will be closed from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM so the staff can attend the celebration in the Kresge Café.

We will reopen for phone and email support at 4:00 PM and will be open until our normal 6:00 PM close time.

HSPH Website Issues

Beginning at 7:15 pm on October 23, HSPH began experiencing database connectivity issues related to a faulty upgrade by our hosting vendor. A temporary page was created to continue providing access to email, courseware, and other unaffected sites.

After work throughout the night, the HSPH website was restored at 6:15 am.

The HSPH web team and our vendors are continuing work on the site this morning to resolve a few remaining issues.

Additional Google Analytics Training Offerred on October 24 and 31

By popular demand, we have added two new Google Analytics training sessions this month to help you learn more about statistics on your site.  Even if you came to our first training sessions last week,  these additional sessions will be even more jam-packed with new information, insights and a sneak peak at new features to come.

For those of you who have taken the introductory training, this session will go into more depth about how to use each of the Google Analytics screens and sections to analyze and compare website traffic over time.

You will learn how to compare metric side by side, delve in depth into what the stats means, and set up goals and content experiments to see how variations of a page perform against each other.  You will also learn how to determine what on your site is important to your visitors.

Brush up on your Microsoft Office skills this Fall!

The Department of Information Technology is pleased to offer our fall computer training series for faculty, staff and researchers.

Fall 2013 classes include:

  • Microsoft Excel 2010 classes of all levels from Introductory to Advanced
    • Whether you are new to Microsoft Excel or an advanced user, these trainings will cover what you need to know to become an Excel power user.

    • Keep your projects on track, on time and within your budget by learning how to track all project management information in Microsoft Project.

    • Learn how to manage and customize project plans during the implementation stages of a project.

These courses are free of charge and are conveniently located in the Kresge computer labs.  Courses are taught by New Horizons, HSPH’s training partner, and include an excellent workbook that can be used as a reference after the training.

Malware Warning

Dear Harvard Community,

We are currently experiencing a targeted malware campaign against Harvard resources. We believe the malware is coming in via phishing emails. If you receive an email from someone you do not know or receive an email from someone you know that looks suspicious, do not open any attachments or click any links. If you suspect your machine is currently infected please contact the HSPH Helpdesk for support.

New Staff Additions: Sherrell Pierre and Joe Horrigan

We are pleased to welcome two new additions to our IT staff, Sherrell Pierre and Joe Horrigan.

Sherrell Pierre began working in September and will be working 10-12 hours each week through early December as part of her program at Roxbury Community College (RCC).  She is a candidate for an associate of science degree in information systems technology. Sherrell manages and teaches at a computer laboratory at the Grove Hall Apartments and has formerly worked for RCC as a computer lab assistant.

Sherrell is our fourth coop in the the HSPH-RCC partnership coordinated by the HSPH Office of Human Resources.

Joe Horrigan also began working in September as a contractor and will be with User Services through early December.  Joe has been working in IT for nearly 10 years and brings excellent computer and communications skills to the department.

Both Sherrell and Joe will be providing computer support to the community at the Helpdesk, as well as in the field, with support and training provided by our User Services team.
