Monthly Maintenance Window: Thursday, September 11

UPDATE: All updates were successful and systems are fully operational.

On Thursday, September 11th, we will be performing our normal monthly system maintenance to all servers.

The maintenance window will last from 7PM to 1AM.

There will be a school-wide Wireless Network outage between 7:30PM to 8:30PM:

  • Wireless access from inside SPH buildings will be interrupted
  • Wired access will not be effected

The following services will have one or two small outages:
(You can continue to work, but may have brief pauses while services restart)

The following services will be unavailable from 7pm – 10:30pm:

The following services will be unaffected during the maintenance window:

HSPH Helpdesk Temporarily Moved to Kresge 209

Update 11:30 am: The Helpdesk has reopened in Kresge LL15.

The IT Office and HSPH Helpdesk in Kresge LL15 are currently closed due to a water leak and associated clean-up.

The HSPH Helpdesk is operating for walk-ins until further notice in Kresgse 209.  Phone support is not impacted and the User Services team is available for phone support.

Classes in Kresge LL6 are not impacted and will be held as scheduled.  The student computer lab in Kresge LL19 likewise is not impacted and remains open for students.

Maintenance Window: Saturday, August 23

UPDATE: As of 12:10 pm, all systems have been verified and are fully functioning. 

UPDATE: As of 7:30 am, firewall maintenance has been completed.  IT staff are working on testing and verifying systems.

On Saturday morning, August 23rd, we will be performing maintenance to the SPH network firewalls.  The maintenance window will last from 6:00AM to 12:00PM.

There will be a Network outage between 6:00AM and 9:00AM that will affect all of the SPH campus.

ALL ACCESS to servers and the Internet will be interrupted.  

We anticipate that the actual outage will be brief and the majority of the maintenance window will be used to test and troubleshoot any unexpected issues.

The following services will be unaffected during the maintenance window if you are connecting from outside HSPH:

Maintenance Window: Sunday, August 17

Update on Monday, August 18, 9:00 AM:  All systems are fully functioning and downtime maintenance has been successfully completed.

Update on Monday, August 18, 8:30 AM: The computer laboratory network drive issue has been resolved.

Update on Monday, August 18, 8:00 AM: An issue has been identified in the computer labs.  Computers are currently unable to connect to network drives.

On Sunday, August 17th, we will be performing our normal system maintenance to all servers.

The maintenance window will last from 7PM to 1AM.

Note – Our normal Thursday window is being moved to Sunday to accommodate the academic calendar.

There will be a school-wide Wireless Network outage between 7:00PM to 10:00PM:

  • Wireless access from inside SPH buildings will be interrupted

Note – Wired access will not be effected

New Staff Additions: Chris Doherty and Deion Barawid

We are pleased to welcome two new additions to the Department of Information Technology, Christopher Doherty and Deion Barawid.  Both Chris and Deion are Northeastern University students and will be working for 6 months full-time as co-ops at HSPH as part of their degree program.  They replace Lina Ji and TJ Porter, who completed their assignments with great success.

Chris Doherty, Co-op

Chris Doherty is a candidate for a bachelor of science in information science and business and will graduate from Northeastern in May 2016.  His last co-op was with John Hancock – Investment Division in Boston, where he was a project coordinator supporting the Resource Allocation process for the Investment Division. He was selected as a John Hancock High Performer Co-op.

Chris studied tenor saxophone for 9 years and achieved best soloist award at the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival.

He will be working the 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM shift.

Deion Barawid

Deion Barawid, Co-op

Deion Barawid is a candidate for a bachelor of science in computer science and cognitive psychology and will graduate from Northeastern in May 2016.  This is his first co-op position.

He was a National Director for the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue, Inc., from August 2012 to May 2013, where he collaborated with other national directors across the East coast to help plan and organize larger-scale conferences.

Deion has designed and built sets and organized light fixtures/wiring with a team for theatrical productions. He also has studied saxophone and percussion!

He will be working the 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM shift.

RCN Network Outage Impacting Huntington Avenue and Tremont Street Locations

UPDATE, 7/11/2014, 11:30 AM: RCN reports that the network will be repaired by 6 pm.

UPDATE, 7/11/2014, 8:00 AM: RCN remains down and HSPH sites below do not have network connectivity.

The Department of Information Technology and Operations are working with affected offices on temporary relocations and other work-arounds.  Please contact the HSPH Helpdesk at 432-HELP for more information.

A major fiber cut in South Boston is causing a widespread network outage for RCN customers at Harvard.

We have lost network connectivity to our locations at:

  • 708 Huntington Avenue
  • 718 Huntington Avenue and
  • 1633-1639 Tremont Street

RCN is stating that it will be after 5PM before service will be restored.

New Helpdesk Ticketing System Implemented

As one of our steps to improve customer service, the IT Department is moving to a new ticketing system to process your requests for IT assistance.

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, April 16, we will be transitioning all new IT service requests to Harvard University IT’s (HUIT) Service Now ticketing system. This will replace our current Origin ticketing system.

Some of the new features that will allow faster response time on tickets are:

  • Integrated communication with a customer through built-in email, so all questions or requests are easily captured in the ticket.
  • Automated ticket creation using our IT web forms, such as new account request or new computer requests. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/information-technology/forms-fees/
  • Full integration with other HUIT departments that support our email and networking systems allowing quicker turn-around time for those related service requests.

On the customer side, the major change you will see are the emails you receive when a ticket is opened or resolved will have a different look than the current emails from the Origin system.

Tickets that are currently open in our Origin system will be resolved in that system and will not move to the new system.
