New Spring Coop: Lawrence Manigault

We are pleased to welcome a new coop this spring from Roxbury Community College, Lawrence Manigault.  This placement is part of a new partnership coordinated by the HSPH Office of Human Resources.  Lawrence is our third coop with Hansel Ruiz and  Moses Mokuolu completing assignments in the fall.

Lawrence will work 10-12 hours each week providing computer support to the community at the Helpdesk, as well as in the field, with support and training provided by our User Services team.

He is a candidate for an associate degree in information systems technology and has outstanding technical skills.

New Staff Member: Dylan O’Connell

The HSPH Department of Information Technology welcomes new hire Dylan O’Connell. Dylan will work as a user support specialist in our User Services Group and will provide helpdesk, desktop, classroom, and media services support to the community. He replaces Nate Varney, who left the User Services team for a promotion with the our server team.

Dylan is a graduate of Tufts University, where he earned a bachelor of science in physics.   While a student, Dylan spent 3+ years at Tufts University IT, working as a support technician at their main computer laboratories.  He has extensive experience with front-line technical support, computer and printer troubleshooting, and audio-visual equipment.

We are excited about Dylan’s technical and customer service skills.   He brings great support experience in an academic setting to HSPH.

Interesting fact: Dylan had two outstanding internships while at Tufts.  He first worked a summer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, including imaging work on satellites orbiting Jupiter.  Later, he worked at Rhode Island Hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology on smartphone applications to reduce treatment errors with safety checklists and information sharing.

We are pleased to announce two recent promotions:

  • Tom Gatton has been promoted from server administrator to server administrator II
  • Nate Varney has been promoted from senior user support associate to server administrator

Tom Gatton has been at Harvard since 2006, working first for Harvard University Information Systems (now HUIT) and then Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS).  Tom joined HSPH in 2010 and has consistently been one of the top ticket closers in IT since his arrival.  He will continue work with Brian Pedranti, server manager, on maintaining HSPH’s server and storage infrastructure that now numbers more than 100 virtual machines, a disaster recovery facility, and more than 80 TB under management.  Tom replaces Alex Garcia-Rangel who was promoted to a management role for Student Information System (SIS) team.

Nate Varney has been with HSPH since 2009, when he joined the User Services team.  Nate was quickly promoted in 2010 to senior user support specialist.  Nate, like Tom, has consistently been a top ticket closer and provided excellent support for our audio-visual infrastructure, classroom technology, and computer laboratory software imaging.  Nate also worked on the production team for many events in the Forum at HSPH and Voices from the Field series.  In his new server administrator role, he will be joining the server team and leaving User Services. He will be involved in a number of important projects including server upgrades, a virtual desktop pilot for instructional and administrative computing, and replacement of the Novell infrastructure.  Nate replaces Tom Gattton.

Congratulations to Alex Garcia-Rangel

We are pleased to announce that Alex Garcia-Rangel has been promoted to SIS Manager.  Alex has been the interim SIS manager since mid-November on a part-time basis.

Alex has been working on the SIS project since its inception in 2008.  He was on the implementation team as the technical lead.  Alex has built all servers for SIS, maintains our backups, maintains our disaster recovery site, and administers other products/servers that tie into Banner (e.g., EMS and PowerFAIDS).

Alex has been with the HSPH IT Department for more than 10 years.  He first worked with our desktop team as a technician and was promoted to a server administrator position with the server team in 2006.  In addition to his excellent technical skills, his customer-service focus, strong troubleshooting skills, and outstanding communication skills will be an immediate asset to the SIS team.

Alex’s new responsibilities will include:

  • Managing team of 4 SIS employees.
  • Maintaining and upgrading Ellucian Banner infrastructure and MyHSPH portal.
  • Working with the Registrar, Admissions, and Financial Aid on planning, reporting, feature requests, and training needs.
  • Working with functional users from around the school to enhance and expand our system.

New Staff Member: Caryn D’Agostino

The HSPH Department of Information Technology welcomes new hire Caryn D’Agostino. Caryn will work as an Oracle DBA and banner system administrator for the department’s student information system (SIS) team.  She replaces Gagandeep Multani, who was on a contract assignment with HSPH.

With more than 7 years of Banner and Oracle experience in higher education, Caryn will be an immediate asset to HSPH and our department. She has a wealth of experience with upgrading components of Ellucian SIS systems.  Most recently at Emerson College, she successfully upgraded Oracle to version 11g as well as upgraded their software to the most recent versions.

Prior to Emerson College, Caryn spent 3 years at Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare as a DBA.  She has also worked for EMC, Sungard/Ellucian and Curry College.   Throughout Caryn’s career, she has blended strong technical skills with outstanding communication skills.  We are looking forward to her contribution in improving our student information system and portal at HSPH.

Interesting fact:  Caryn has been studying in the evening since 2008 at Boston University and is nearing completion of a master’s degree in computer information systems. Her undergraduate work was also in computer information systems.

New Staff Member: David Marshall

The HSPH Department of Information Technology welcomes new hire David Marshall. David will work as a senior web and application developer for the HSPH web team. David replaces Blain Smith, who left IT to become a partner at Mad Glory Interactive, a boutique design and development studio that builds online products for entertainment properties.

David joins us from US Sailing, where he was their web manager.  He led moving their site to WordPress, the same platform adopted by HSPH for content management.  He has excellent experience with and knowledge of open-source technologies/languages, including PHP, WordPress, AJAX and MySQL.   He has a portfolio of more than a dozen clients.

David has a bachelor of arts in biological sciences from Connecticut College, where he graduated summa cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.  He was also named a Winthrop Scholar, the school’s highest academic honor.

Interesting facts: 
Away from work, David is an avid sailor.  He competed on his college sailing team and continues to race in both national and international competitions.

SIS Team Joins the Department of Information Technology

We are pleased to announce that the Student Information System (SIS) team has joined the Department of Information Technology.  The SIS team was formerly located at Smith Street under the direction of the Student Services.

The Department of Information Technology has managed the SIS server and network infrastructure since launching the system in 2010.  Our aim with this transition is to coordinate programming, database, and customer-service activities with other similar operations within IT.  IT management will continue to work closely with the functional groups (Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid, Office for Students, and Career Services) to plan upgrades and enhancements to the SIS and MyHSPH.

The SIS team may be reached by coming to the HSPH Helpdesk.  Their new office space is in the Kresge Building in the former computer laboratory, Kresge LL10, which was renovated in the late fall.

New Staff Member: Jacob Yerdon

The HSPH Department of Information Technology welcomes new hire Jacob Yerdon. Jake will work as a senior web and application developer for the HSPH web team. Jake replaces Kevin Wnek who left IT for Thomson Reuters and the position of senior web and streaming developer.

Jake joins us from Lockheed Martin where he worked for four years in two different roles; first as a systems integration analyst and more recently as a data warehouse analyst.  Prior to his work at Lockheed, he was a computer specialist for Madison-Oneida Regional Information Center where he helped coordinate the mass  implementation of a school management software used by over 30 New York public schools in central/upstate New York.

Jake has excellent experience with and knowledge of open source technologies/languages including PHP, WordPress, AJAX and MySQL.  He has become an immediate asset in working on the HSPH website rebranding and migration to WordPress, a project that is scheduled for launch in November.

HSPH IT Welcomes Fall Coops

Our Harvard Hero

Congratulations to Sarah Bearse, HSPH Leadership Studio Technical Manager, for being recognized by the University in the Harvard Heroes Program.  With many outstanding candidates from all over the University, only 49 individuals from more than 12,000 Harvard staff were selected as Harvard Heroes in 2012.

 

On June 5th, Sarah and her invited guests (family, friends, and colleagues) will attend a celebration for 2012 Harvard Heroes in Sanders Theater hosted by President Faust with a reception in the Harvard Faculty Club.
