Disaster Recovery Testing Over Winter Break

UPDATE: Disaster recovery testing was successful and completed as scheduled.

The HSPH Department of Information Technology will be performing a full disaster recovery test over the holiday break.

This will cause outages on 2 separate days. We will try to keep the individual outages short as possible, but reserve the complete window in case of difficulties.

The first window will be Thursday , December 26 from 9AM to 5PM.

NOTE – This is an extended, disruptive outage. Go green and shutdown your computers before the break!

During this window, HUIT will also be performing necessary network upgrades and testing to our data center hardware.

The following services are affected. They will be down for an extended amount of time from 9AM to 5PM:

  • File and Print services
  • ICF File services
  • ICF Print services
  • NetStorage
  • Kanaka
  • Powerfaids and NetPartner
  • In-house Web Servers and application servers
  • Accellion file transfer service
  • ALICE
  • MyHSPH Portal

The following services will have several 10-20 minute outages from 12PM – 5PM due to network tests:

  • Wasabi
  • HPCC system

The following services will have several 10-20 minute outages from 12PM – 5PM due to network tests:

NOTE – these will only be affected from inside of the HSPH buildings:

  • HUIT Icemail (Outlook) system
  • Internet
  • Wireless

The following services will be unaffected during the maintenance window from outside of the HSPH buildings:

  • HUIT Icemail (Outlook) system
  • ALICE Development/Testing systems
  • HSPH Homepage/Web Server
  • GMAIL

The second window will be Monday, December 30 from 9AM to 2PM.

Maintenance Window: Thursday, December 12 and Pharros Printing Issue

UPDATE: As of 9:30 am, student printing is back online and fully functioning.

UPDATE: 8 am, Friday, December 13.  We are currently working on an issue with Pharros print release in student laboratories that resulted from last evening’s downtime.  All other upgrades were successful.

On Thursday, December 12, we will be performing our normal system maintenance to all servers.

The maintenance window will last from 7PM to 1 AM.

The following services will have one or two small outages:

Early Departmental Closure on Wednesday, November 27

The HSPH Department of Information Technology will be closing at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 27.

We will have very limited phone and email support from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Wednesday.

We will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29 for the Thanksgiving Holiday and will reopen at 8:00 AM on Monday, December 2.

Please note that all servers are monitored 24 hours/7 days week.

A Future NPR Host in the HSPH Family

Ian Tosh, HSPH’s new manager for Media and Educational Technology Services (METS),  had an eventful Halloween.  Ian’s year-and-a-half old son Nolan shares his father’s enthusiasm for audio-visual devices and loves to play with an old microphone around the house.  An idea for a unique Halloween costume was hatched as his son also bears some resemblance to NPR’s OnPoint host Tom Ashbrook, a family favorite.

When the costume was a big hit in his neighborhood, Ian decided to send Tom a photo of the young broadcaster.   This led to two NPR blog posts, hundreds of Facebook “likes,” and a gracious invitation to tour the NPR studio and meet Tom.

Second Round of Website Issues

UPDATE: The IE8 issue has been resolved.

Beginning at approximately 12:00 am on October 25, HSPH began experiencing load balancer and server connectivity issues related to a faulty upgrade by our hosting vendor.

After work throughout the night, the HSPH website was restored at 6:50 am.

The HSPH web team and our vendors are continuing work on the site this morning to resolve a few remaining issues.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this outage caused.

Departmental Hours and Services on October 25

Because of the all-day HSPH Centennial Celebration tomorrow, October 25,  the Department of Information Technology will only be able to provide the following limited services:

Computer Support

Phone and email support only, technicians will not be able to be in the field for service requests.

We will be unable to provide media services support for the day with the exception of the full slate of Centennial events.

Closure During Celebration

We will reopen for phone and email support at 4:00 PM and will be open until our normal 6:00 PM close time.

HSPH Website Issues

Beginning at 7:15 pm on October 23, HSPH began experiencing database connectivity issues related to a faulty upgrade by our hosting vendor. A temporary page was created to continue providing access to email, courseware, and other unaffected sites.

After work throughout the night, the HSPH website was restored at 6:15 am.

The HSPH web team and our vendors are continuing work on the site this morning to resolve a few remaining issues.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this outage caused.
