Information for New Apple OS Mavericks 10.9.2

Why upgrade?

Apple recently released OS Mavericks 10.9.2, with this release they have announced that they will not be supporting older versions of the Apple operating systems with security patches or product improvements. This leaves older operating systems vulnerable to attack by spyware or other intrusions.

What does it cost to upgrade to Mavericks?

There is no cost to upgrade to Mavericks, Apple has stopped charging for its OS upgrades with Mavericks. However, you may need to buy newer versions of installed software if you are running an older OS. The IT Helpdesk will make sure that your Office products are up-to-date and can advice you on other software that may need to be purchased and upgraded.

Can my Mac be upgraded?

To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:

  • iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

Your Mac also needs:

  • OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard, v10.6.8 or Mavericks v10.9 already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory
  • 8 GB or more of available space

How do I determine what operating system I am currently running?

From the Apple () menu, choose About This Mac.

How do I upgrade?

For iMac and MacMinis

If you have an iMac or MacMini and you are running OS 10.9 or 10.9.1, then you can simply click on the Software Update button located on the About This Mac screen and click on the Update to Mavericks OS 10.9.2.

If you have an iMac or MacMini and you are running OS 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8, then you must contact the Helpdesk to do the upgrade for you. This allows us to make sure your data is backed up and to check for software compatibility for programs you use such as Endnote or Adobe. This can take most of a day because of the required data backup.

For all Mac Laptops

You must contact the IT Helpdesk before doing this update. We have been encrypting all Mac laptops that have come through the Helpdesk for setup. The encryption software must be updated as part of this upgrade to prevent possible data loss.

If your Mac laptop is running OS 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8, then the Helpdesk must handle the upgrade process for you. This can take most of a day as we will need to decrypt the hard drive, run the upgrade and then re-encrypt the hard drive. This allows us to make sure all of you data is safe and secure.

If your Mac laptop is running OS 10.9 or 10.9.1, then you can run the upgrade yourself but we must do a very quick update to the encryption software after the OS update. You would just need to contact the Helpdesk to schedule this or come down to the Helpdesk to have it done.
