Apple/Mac:

The IT Department also supports Apple/Mac computers and laptops for faculty and staff use. All Apple computers and laptops for HSPH faculty and staff should be purchased through Harvard University’s vendor agreement with Apple to receive the discounted price. Please purchase Apple Care with all computer products.

Please note that not all software that works on a Windows PC will work on a Apple/Mac. Please check with your software provider before switching to a Apple/Mac.

Apple computers can be purchased through Harvard’s Technology Product Center Apple Store

Printers for Department Use:

The HSPH IT Department supports Dell and HP printers (Inkjet, Laserjet and Color Laserjet), as well as Canon and Ricoh copier/scanner/printer units leased through IKON.

Dell Printers and HP Printers:

The HSPH IT Department strongly recommends that departments only buy Dell or HP printers. Dell printers are covered by Dell On-Site Warranty Repair. Harvard’s Technology Product Center (a preferred repair service) will only repair HP printers.

When purchasing a printer, please determine if it will need to be networked for use by multiple people. Not all HP network printers will work on the HSPH network. If you would like to discuss options and recommendations, please contact the Helpdesk at helpdesk@hsph.harvard.edu or 617-432-HELP.

Dell printers can be purchased through the HCOM Procurement System.

HP printers can be purchased through HP.com or GovConnection.

Canon or Ricoh Copier/Scanner/Printers:

The HSPH IT Department supports Canon or Ricoh Copier/Scanner/Printers leased through IKON (a preferred vendor). These units can be setup as a group network printer and to allow scanning to email. An active network jack will be needed near the unit for these services. Please contact the Helpdesk at helpdesk@hsph.harvard.edu or 617-432-HELP for more information.

IKON can be reached at Ikon Office Solutions or phone the Harvard Account Rep Thom Arpin, thom_arpin@ricoh-usa.com.

Computer Accessories:

The University has an agreement with GovConnection to provide computer accessories at discounted prices. This includes computer speakers, keyboards, and monitors, as well as many other items. Please do not purchase computers through GovConnection for department use; the IT Department will not be able to support them.

GovConnection can be reached through the HCOM Procurement System.

About the Dell Contract

As of January 1, 2010, Dell Computers became the Harvard University Prime Vendor for desktop computers, laptops and accessories. This agreement allowed the University’s various IT Departments to pick desktop computers and laptops that meet the needs of the University and then determine base standards for each model (i.e. the hard drive size, amount of memory, etc…) to ensure that purchasers receive the best unit available. By staying within these standards it allows departments to purchase computers at a deeply discounted price. IT Departments can also change and upgrade standards as needed to stay on top of new technology. Click here for the full announcement sent out by Sue Walsh, Harvard’s Interim CIO, on the agreement.
