Department of Information Technology

Supported Hardware

The Information Technology (IT) Department at the Harvard School of Public Health has created a list of recommended hardware and software products based on the department’s ability to provide support for them.

The hardware products contained in the listing are fully supported by the IT Department. There are currently no charges for repairs of standard hardware products in the warranty period. In the case of an item needing repair outside the warranty period or an upgrade (for example, you require a larger hard drive), clients are charged only for the materials.

It will be extremely beneficial for our clients to choose from the products we recommend and support. In cases where your equipment is not supported, we can recommend other support resources.

All Dell computers and laptops for HSPH faculty and must be purchased through Harvard University’s vendor agreements with Dell, using the Department portal.

All Apple computers and laptops for HSPH faculty and staff should be purchased through Harvard University’s vendor agreement with Apple to receive the discounted price.  Please purchase Apple Care with all computer products.

When purchasing a printer, please determine if it will need to be networked for use by multiple people.  Not all HP network printers will work on the HSPH network.  If you would like to discuss options and recommendations, please contact the Helpdesk at helpdesk@hsph.harvard.edu or 617-432-HELP.

PLEASE NOTE: As of January 1, 2010, Dell Computers became the University Prime Vendor for all new PC computer and laptop purchases. The IT Department will continue to support all currently owned IBM/Lenovo computers and laptops until the end of their useful life. We are not supporting any Lenovo products purchased after January 1, 2010, and we are not supporting Dells purchased during the previous Dell contract.

Smartphone / PDA Support

The HSPH IT Department supports the use of PDAs or Smart Phones to synchronize with your Outlook Email account.

We fully support the following devices:

  • Blackberry devices (requires Enterprise Data Plan from your carrier)
  • Apple iPhone (AT&T and Verizon)
  • Android devices

Full support includes email, calendar, and contact syncing.

In order to fully sync your Blackberry device, you will need to purchase an additional data plan from your phone service provider. A Business Enterprise Data Plan is required to sync your device to the email system.  Blackberry devices utilize Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES).
