Server Policies

Major servers under HSPH management include:

  • GroupWise Email system (7 Linux virtual machines)
  • 14 node VMWare ESX cluster
  • Web, database, application and video servers (Apache on LINUX/UNIX; MS SQL Server; ColdFusion MX; RealNetwork’s HELIX server)
  • Dozens of smaller task-specific servers
  • Full DR-site with disk mirroring between our EMC CX Disk arrays

The server team provides both free and fee-based services to the community.

Free

In an effort to consolidate and protect servers, secure server housing for departments in our card-accessed, climate-controlled server room is available free of charge.

Contract basis

  • departmental server management (priced on a per server per year rate)
  • additional disk space (charged on a per MB per year rate)

Server Management Contracts

HSPH has two options for departments that have a need for a large amount of disk space.

  • Option I — Purchase Space on Existing Server

    Space may be purchased on our cluster system at the rate of $60.00/GB/Year

    This fee includes:

    • 24/7 support and monitoring
    • mutiple staff members preforming the management
    • nightly backups
    • storage of the backup tapes in a locked cabinet
    • storage of the last weekly backup tapes to a fire-proof safe in a different building
    • install server based virus scanning software and keep it up to date daily
    • monitoring all security updates and apply them ASAP
    • manage user and group permissions and directories
    • manage user accounts
  • Option II — Purcahse Management Services by HSPH staff

    For those departments that have a need for their own server, we offer fee-based non-core server management services to HSPH departments. We currently manage any Novell Netware or Microsoft Windows Server OS.

    Pricing is $10,635/year. This includes:

    • 24/7 support and monitoring
    • housing of the server in our secured climate controlled and alarmed server room
    • mutiple staff members preforming the management
    • nightly backups
    • storage of the backup tapes in a locked cabinet
    • storage of the last weekly backup tapes to a fire-proof safe in a different building
    • install server based virus scanning software and keep it up to date daily
    • monitoring all security updates and apply them ASAP
    • manage user and group permissions and directories
    • manage user accounts

      We will not manage any custom or 3rd party software such as database applications under the normal pricing. Please call us to discuss these options. We can support some software, depending upon our experience with it.
