The mission of the JBL Center is to apply its considerable expertise insignal transduction, molecular toxicology, and molecular stressresponses as well as that of affiliated units to enhance ourunderstanding of the hazards of exposure of human populations toionizing radiation and other toxicants, and how these hazards may becontrolled or prevented. An important focus is to improve ourunderstanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the cellularresponse to genotoxic agents including agents with therapeuticpotential as well as environmental toxicants. In the case of accidentalor intentional radiation exposures in the environment, the Center hasan active radiation countermeasures program and cooperates with othersat the University and elsewhere in formulating effective strategies torespond to such incidents.
