Through My Eyes: Nine Exceptional Children Use Photography to Tell Their Stories
Through My Eyes is a collection of photographs and stories that takes the viewer on a journey through the minds of nine children with special needs who use photography to communicate their feelings and individuality. For six months the children, ages 7 to18 from eastern Massachusetts, documented their lives and surroundings using digital cameras. During one-on-one sessions, they learned basic camera skills and photography techniques to help them independently make images related to four main themes: who I am, how I feel, my future, and my family and community. The children used the photographs as a prompt during recorded interviews to generate dialogue about the their feelings. Through My Eyes allows these exceptional children to control their self-representation and it allows the viewer to understand the children's abilities, rather than his or her disabilities.
