David Hemenway will discuss gun violence in reddit ‘AMA’

Q & A will precede President Obama’s town hall on reducing gun violence

On January 5, 2016 President Barack Obama announced a series of executive actions intended to reduce the number of mass shootings, suicides, and killings that have become all too common in the U.S. Speaking from the White House, he said that the gun control package will expand the number of gun buyers who are subject to criminal background checks by clarifying existing law. The President also said that more people will be hired to run the FBI’s background check system to “bring it into the 21st century.” He is also requesting an additional $500 million from Congress aimed at increasing access to mental health care.

On January 7 at 8:00 PM ET, President Obama will hold a nationally televised town hall to discuss the new gun control initiatives. Ahead of that forum, David Hemenway, professor of health policy at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center, will discuss gun violence and public health during a reddit AMA, beginning at 6:00 PM ET.
