Theresa Betancourt, Dyann Wirth honored at annual Alice Hamilton lecture

April 8, 2016 — Theresa Betancourt discussed her research on the role of conflict, adversity, and resiliency in children at the Sixth Annual Alice Hamilton Award Lecture on April 5, 2016 in Kresge Cafeteria. Following her talk, Betancourt, associate professor of child health and human rights and director of the Research Program on Children and Global Adversity at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, was presented with the Alice Hamilton Award, which recognizes the achievements of a promising junior woman investigator in public health.

Alice.Hamilton.5The Alice Hamilton Award recognizes the impact in public health and the future promise of a woman faculty member and honors the memory of Alice Hamilton, a pioneer in the fields of toxicology and occupational health who was the first woman appointed to the faculty at Harvard.

In her talk, “Child Mental Health And Development In Multiple Contexts Of Adversity: From Longitudinal Research To Implementation Science,” Betancourt talked about her work with child soldiers, their families, and communities, as well as with refugees both in the Boston area and abroad.

The Committee on the Advancement of Women Faculty, which hosted the lecture, also presented Dyann Wirth, Richard Pearson Strong professor of infectious diseases and chair of the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, with its second annual Mentoring Award. The award celebrates the essential role of mentors in the success of the Harvard Chan’s faculty members and growth of the School community.
