Nazmim Bhuiya, DrPH ’18, awarded Schweitzer Fellowship

Harvard Chan School student Nazmim Bhuiya, DrPH ’18, is one of 15 graduate students in the 2016-2017 class of Boston Schweitzer Fellows, the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship announced July 22, 2016. The fellows will spend the next year learning to effectively address social factors that impact health and developing leadership skills. Schweitzer Fellows develop and implement service projects that address the root causes of health disparities in under-resourced communities, while also fulfilling their academic responsibilities. Each project is implemented in collaboration with a community-based health and/or social service organization. The fellowship, named for the physician-humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, selected approximately 240 fellows across the United States this year.

Bhuiya will address adolescent health needs at the Tobin Community Center in Mission Hill, a part of Roxbury, MA. She will utilize sports and intergenerational mentoring tools to promote healthy bodies and minds. The youth will participate in weekly team-based sports activities designed to develop skills to improve their social and emotional well-being and establish supportive relationships with older adults while engaged in community- based projects.

Bhuiya said she looks forward to connecting with her students and “hopes to make a positive impact in their life trajectories.”
