Deepali Ravel, a doctoral student who conducts malaria research at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, has received a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH). The award, presented at the ASTMH’s annual meeting, held November 13-17, 2016 in Atlanta, is aimed at recognizing the work of young scientists and encouraging them to pursue careers in various aspects of tropical disease research.
Ravel received the award for research she presented at the meeting that explores the genetic mechanisms involved when the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, infects red blood cells in humans.
Also at the meeting, Dyann Wirth, Richard Pearson Strong Professor of Infectious Diseases and chair of the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, was named an ASTMH Fellow. The Fellowship recognizes sustained professional excellence in tropical medicine, hygiene, global health, or related disciplines.
