An incentive program established under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 was a key factor that drove American hospitals to adopt electronic medical record systems, according to a study co-authored by Ashish Jha, K.T. Li Professor of Health Policy at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, and Julia Adler-Milstein of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
The study appears in the August 2017 Health Affairs.
The authors wrote that the legislation could be a model for influencing future health technology adoption.
