Efforts by a team of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health researchers to expedite the discovery of a new and improved tuberculosis vaccine were featured in an August 18, 2017 STAT article.
The article highlighted work by Jeffrey Wagner, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, with genetically engineered relatives of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that kills at least 1.5 million people annually. The researchers aim to alter the germ so that it one day can be safely tested as a vaccine or possible cure in people.
