In the wake of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on February 14, 2018, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Dean Michelle Williams reiterated her call for the loosening of restrictions on federal funding for research on gun violence. In a February 16 message to the School community, she said that this research could lead to a greater understanding of the causes of gun violence and ways it could be prevented.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not funded research on gun violence since 1996, when Congress passed an amendment to a spending bill that forbade the CDC from using money to “advocate or promote gun control.”
