A June 3, 2018 article in Managed Care discussed efforts to improve health care cost transparency from providers and payers, including a push by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to have hospitals publicize their standard charges and several efforts by states to create provider price-transparency laws.
The article quoted Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Anna Sinaiko, assistant professor of health economics and policy in the Department of Health Policy and Management.
“Ideally, patients would see price information at the time when they are making a decision about whether and where to receive care,” Sinaiko said. “I’d love to see price information incorporated into primary care office visits, for example, when they are getting a referral to a specialist or for a procedure, so they have the opportunity to talk about it with their physician or another clinician in the office.”
