Industry group may try to head off support for single-payer health care law

A new coalition of insurers and drug companies, called Partnership for America’s Health Care Future, may have been formed in response to apparently growing support for a single-payer health care system .

Several prominent Democrats, including potential 2020 presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren, Corey Booker, and Kamala Harris, have recently supported a “Medicare for all” bill floated by Bernie Sanders, according to an August 10, 2018 article in The Hill. It’s possible that the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future may fund studies to undermine the idea and run advertising campaigns against it, according to sources quoted in the article.

“Every one of those organizations that’s in that group will look at Bernie Sanders’s single-payer and see massive losses of money,” said John McDonough, professor of the practice of public health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
