A team led by researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health will conduct a yearlong study of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Jordan.
Led by Jewel Gausman, SD ’17, a research associate with the Women and Health Initiative (WHI), in partnership with the University of Jordan and the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development, the study will focus on a diverse group of economically disadvantaged young people living in the city of Amman. In addition to Jordanians, the study population includes refugees from across the Middle East—in particular, Syrians, Palestinians, Iraqis, and Yemenis.
Jordan has a high prevalence of SGBV, Gausman said. “This study will enable us to better understand the transmission of attitudes and norms.” She said, “We hope our results will open new directions in research on SGBV and provide important insight for interventions focused on social and behavioral change.”
Other participating Harvard Chan School researchers include Ana Langer, director of WHI and professor of the practice of public health, and S V Subramanian, professor of population health and geography.
The research was awarded funding from the World Bank Group and Sexual Violence Research Initiative in April 2019.
