Some of Harvard’s students, faculty and alumni want the university to drop oil and gas companies from its investment portfolio.
Gina McCarthy, professor of the practice of public health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and director of the Center for Climate, Health, and the Global Environment (C-CHANGE), was among those who on Earth Day called for the university to divest in fossil fuels.
“Fossil fuels have been the energy that we have used since hominids came on this earth, but we do not need to be Neanderthals in terms of understanding what we need to do moving forward,” McCarthy said. “Let’s invest where justice belongs. Let’s invest in the future, not the past.”
A spokesperson for the university said the endowment should not be used to achieve political or policy goals, according to the article.
