More than half of Indians who have high blood pressure don’t know it

High blood pressure has become a major health problem among Indians, but over half of those who have it are unaware of their condition, according to a recent study.

The study revealed that even though 45% of Indians have been diagnosed with hypertension, three out of four with the condition have never had their blood pressure measured, according to a May 6, 2019 article in Quartz India.

“Scaling up screening and treatment for high blood pressure is feasible because the condition is easy to test and inexpensive to treat,” said Pascal Geldsetzer, postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Global Health and Population at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and co-author of the study. “Such a scale-up could result in huge benefits for population health in India.”
