Concerns raised about possible Ebola cases in Tanzania

After unofficial reports about several suspected Ebola cases in Tanzania, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement rebuking the African nation for not providing more detailed information.

A September 22, 2019 article in Al Jazeera noted that it is very rare for WHO to issue a public rebuke of a particular country, suggesting that the organization is very worried about the possibility of Ebola in Tanzania. Tanzania shares a border with Democratic Republic of Congo, where an Ebola outbreak has killed more than 2,000 people.

Ashish Jha, K.T. Li Professor of Global Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Global Health and director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, told Al Jazeera that Tanzania needs to be “completely open and transparent about what has happened so far.” He added, “Tanzania should submit their samples for secondary, confirmatory testing. If all the results are negative, this would be very reassuring.”
