Taking a study break—by painting

Female students painting on canvas

February 28, 2020 – Dozens of Harvard Chan School students gathered recently for an evening of painting. The free event was aimed at giving students a mental health break from academic stress.

The event, held in the FXB Lounge, was co-hosted by the Harvard Chan Student Association (HCSA) and the Harvard Chan Organization for the Arts in Public Health.

Caroline Keroack, a PhD candidate in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, guided the students through painting the Boston skyline, although they were encouraged to paint whatever they wished.

Coming together over paint and canvas also gave students a chance to connect with one another in a relaxed social setting, said Sarah Zelasky, vice president of student life for HCSA. “Our school focuses a lot on academia, and that we are also a community, and it’s really important for us to remember that and provide more opportunities for people to hang out and get together,” she said in a February 27 Harvard Crimson article.
