A look at how healthy buildings can improve indoor life

A recent book about healthy buildings co-authored by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Joseph Allen was featured in a New Yorker article by Harvard University historian Jill Lepore.

The article discussed several books about improving indoor environments, including “Healthy Buildings: How Indoor Spaces Drive Performance and Productivity,” published in April 2020, which was written by Allen, associate professor of exposure assessment science and director of the School’s Healthy Buildings program, and John Macomber of Harvard Business School.

The book advises businesses on ways to make their buildings healthier, arguing that doing so will increase employee productivity and company profitability. The co-authors also make the case for establishing national healthy-building standards. Wrote Lepore, “They make a series of precise and persuasive recommendations for everything from insulation and window shades to water filters and vacuum cleaners.”
