October 5, 2020 – Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health experts will discuss topics ranging from COVID-19 and telemedicine to HIV research in Botswana to the future of the Amazon during Harvard Worldwide Week 2020.
The Harvard-wide event, running from October 5-9, showcases the breadth of the University’s global engagement through a host of virtual offerings, including a brand-new event titled “24 Hours of Harvard,” featuring 24 consecutive hours of Harvard programming on global topics. Themes of this year’s Worldwide Week include social justice and human rights, pandemics and global health, and governance and democratic leadership.

October 7, 8-9:30 AM
Global Perspectives On COVID-19
Scientists from the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness (MassCPR) in Boston and international colleagues in China, Italy, and South Africa explore the impact and response to COVID-19 in various regions of the world. Harvard Chan School experts featured include Megan Murray, professor in the Department of Epidemiology, and adjunct professor Salim Abdool Karim, adjunct professor of immunology and infectious diseases.

“Harvard Alumni Impact in South Africa” and “Harvard’s Contribution in the Starting of AAPH.” The second section features a documentary followed by a panel discussion with Wafaie Fawzi, Richard Saltonstall Professor of Population Sciences and Professor of Nutrition, Epidemiology and Global Health, and Interim Oppenheimer Faculty Director of the Harvard University Center for African Studies, and Mary Mwanyika Sando, MPH ’13, chief executive officer of Africa Academy of Public Health.

“The Botswana-Harvard Partnership for HIV Research and Education.” Video presentation describes the work of the Botswana-Harvard Partnership and its ongoing impact on the HIV epidemic and features an interview with Harvard Chan Dean Michelle Williams.

“Amazon 4.0: Defining a Third Way for the Amazon.” Panel discussion on the bio-economy for the Amazon, featuring Marcia Castro, Andelot Professor of Demography, chair of the Department of Global Health and Population, and co-chair of the Brazil Studies Program.
October 7, 10:30-11:30 PM
“COVID-19 and Telemedicine: Experience from China, India and the U.S.” Panel discussion about telemedicine in the three largest countries of the world, featuring Winnie Yip, professor of the practice of global health policy and economics, director of the Harvard China Health Partnership, and interim director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies.
October 8, 1-2 AM
“Daastan è South Asia (Narratives from South Asia).” Event showcases the range of work Harvard has been able to do with partners in South Asia. Features Vish Viswanath, Lee Kum Kee Professor of Health Communication and director of Harvard Chan School’s India Research Center; Winnie Yip; Richard Siegrist, senior lecturer on health care management; and Ananya Awasthi, assistant director of the India Research Center.
