May 13, 2015 — Lorelei Mucci, associate professor of epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, presented the fifth annual Alice Hamilton Award Lecture on May 11, 2015. Mucci’s talk focused on her work in prostate cancer research, including recent findings linking vasectomy and excess weight to risk of the disease.

Mucci said that although women are still a minority in this field, she has never felt her gender to be a barrier in her work. She said that men and women bring different perspectives to research, and “working together, we will really address the burden of disease.”

The Hamilton Lecture, named in honor of the School’s first female faculty member, is sponsored by the Committee on the Advancement of Women Faculty (CAWF).

Meredith Rosenthal, professor of health economics and policy and associate dean for diversity, received the inaugural Mentoring Award from CAWF at the event.

Rosenthal was nominated for her efforts to champion women faculty at the School. In a statement announcing the award, CAWF members said, “An intellectual leader as well as an advocate for balance and diversity, Meredith is esteemed as a role model who inspires her mentees not only to excel but also to celebrate and promote the success of others.”

Accepting the award, Rosenthal said that she was “really touched and humbled,” adding that working to “increase the success and happiness of women at the School … is among my greatest pleasures.”

The event also featured a rare recording of Hamilton’s voice, from a 1963 interview recently uncovered by Heather Mumford, archivist at the Center for the History of Medicine at Countway Library.
