HSPH healthy pyramid helps guide offerings at Google’s cafés

The healthy eating pyramid developed at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) is front and center in the cafés of one of the world’s most prominent companies: Google.

A May 11, 2012 Los Angeles Times article, on Silicon Valley tech companies’ efforts to encourage healthy lifestyles among employees, noted that Google now color codes all of the menu options in its cafés according to HSPH’s healthy eating pyramid.

[[Lilian Cheung]], director of health promotion and communication in HSPH’s Department of Nutrition and co-editorial director of the Nutrition Source website, has worked with other HSPH nutrition faculty to advise Google’s food service department on healthy eating choices since 2009. In September 2011, Cheung helped organize a half-day mindfulness event at Google featuring Buddhist monk and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, with whom she co-authored the 2010 book Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life. The event drew more than 700 Google employees for several hours of mindful breathing, walking, and eating exercises, and a gourmet vegan dinner.
