Harvard School of Public Health’s Division of Policy Translation and Leadership Development welcomed three new Senior Leadership Fellows for the fall 2013 semester. This fellowship program, launched in spring 2012, offers the opportunity for those who have recently served in top-level positions in government, multilateral institutions, non-profit organizations, and journalism to spend three months at HSPH mentoring and teaching students who aspire to similar roles. Two fellowships are offered: The Richard L. and Ronay A. Menschel Senior Leadership Fellows Program, which seeks domestic and international leaders, and the Gro Harlem Brundtland Senior Leadership Fellows Program, which seeks candidates from lower-middle income countries with special emphasis on Africa.
Fall 2013 Richard L. and Ronay A. Menschel Senior Leadership Fellows
Recep Akdag served as Turkey’s minister of health from 2002 to 2013 and was instrumental in the implementation of health reforms. Trained as a pediatrician, he holds a professorship at the Ataturk University School of Medicine in Turkey. Akdag will teach a course this fall entitled, “Leadership Development in Global Health/Health Policy: Making the Case for Universal Health Coverage in Turkey.”
Rafael Bengoa served as the minister for health and consumer affairs in the Basque Government in Spain from 2009 to 2012. He has practiced as a physician in hospital and primary care and in community medicine. Currently, he is the director of the Health Department at the DEUSTO Business School in Spain. Bengoa will teach “Leadership Development in Global Health – Health Care Delivery: Are We Moving in the Same Direction?”

Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o is a member of parliament in Kenya who has served as minister for planning and national development (2003-2005) and minister for medical services (2008-2013). Nyong’o will teach “Leadership Development in Global Health/Policy Making in Kenya: The Case of Four Parastatals.”
