Syrian refugee children in Lebanon extremely vulnerable

A new report released by Harvard’s FXB Center for Health and Human Rights on January 13, 2014 documents the dire conditions faced by Syrian refugee children in Lebanon. Released in conjunction with a United Nations-sponsored donor conference on Syria taking place in Kuwait on January 15, the report urges increased funding and a long-term humanitarian response to meet the needs of these extremely vulnerable children.

More than half of the one million Syrians seeking refuge in Lebanon since the outbreak of hostilities in their home country in March 2011 are under age 18. In addition to stressful living conditions and a lack of basic needs, they face limited access to education and increased vulnerability to forced labor and sexual exploitation.

Report authors Susan Bartels, fellow and visiting scientist at the FXB Center, and Kathleen Hamill, fellow at the FXB Center, conducted their assessment over a 10-day period in Lebanon in November 2013.
