Stephen Gilman appointed to head NICHD branch

Stephen Gilman, associate professor of social and behavioral sciences at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, was appointed acting chief of the Health Behavior Branch (HBB) of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Gilman, SM ’99, ScD ’01, researches the developmental origins of health inequalities and aims to identify intervention targets during childhood that could reduce inequalities over the course of life. Results of his research demonstrate the link between disadvantaged childhood environments and the development and subsequent recurrence of mood and substance disorders in adulthood.

The appointment was announced January 29, 2015 and will start on April 13.

HBB designs and conducts research to identify determinants of health behavior and to test educational, behavioral, and environmental strategies for improving or protecting maternal, child, and adolescent health.
