Diabetes and Depression Are a "Two-way Street," Study Finds

People with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for developing depression and vice-versa, according to a new report published in the November 22, 2010 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

"We can say that the two conditions are linked to each other and are both the causes and the consequences of each other," Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at HSPH and the study’s senior author, told CNNHealth. The researchers followed 65,381 women aged 50 to 75 over ten years who were participating in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital-based Nurses’ Health Study. The article notes that scientists have long believed the conditions are a “two-way street” but until now have not found strong corroborating evidence. Even after accounting for risk factors linked to both depression and diabetes, such as higher body mass index (BMI) and lack of regular exercise, the associations in the study held.
