Global Health: HSPH's David Bloom Serves as Guest Editor of Journal Issue On Social Security and Demographic Change

David Bloom, Chair, Department of Global Health and Population and Clarence James Gamble Professor of Economics and Demography, is the guest editor of a double issue of the International Social Security Review on “Social security and the challenge of demographic change.” The special edition coincides with the International Social Security Association (ISSA) World Social Security Forum, to be held November 29 to December 4, 2010, in Cape Town, South Africa.

Bloom and ISSR editor Roddy McKinnon of the ISSA, Geneva, Switzerland, co-authored an introduction, “Social security and the challenge of demographic change,” for the journal.  They describe the aging of the population and the impact that this is expected to have on social security administrations throughout the world.

In a separate article, Bloom and colleagues write about “Economic security arrangements in the context of population ageing in India.”  HSPH co-authors for that article include Ajay Mahal, adjunct associate professor of international health economics, and Lawrence Rosenberg, research associate in global health and population. The authors discuss the rapid aging of India's population and other factors that increase the need for improved economic security programs for a large portion of the population, particularly women, who are at increased risk of poverty as they age.
