Broad institutional change is needed to leverage the power of new mobile technologies to transform global health care, said HSPH Dean Julio Frenk at the mHealth Summit on mobile technology and health, held in Washington D.C. on November 10.
Frenk delivered one of the keynote addresses at the conference, which focused on ways mobile technology can improve access to and the quality of health care. He focused on the system-wide institutional and leadership transformation, particularly creative new thinking about health care financing and delivery, that he says must support any technological innovation in order to break down access barriers to care.
In an article in RTTNews, Frenk was quoted as saying the world is “at the threshold of a new era of global health.” He called on leaders across sectors to participate in the “shared social objective” of universal access to health care.
Health care is ultimately “all about people,” he said—from patients to professionals to policymakers. "In order to improve the delivery of health care,” he said, “we need software and hardware, but we also need human-ware."
