Health Care in China: Progress Made, More Needed

In a November 1, 2011 New York Times opinion piece, Yuanli Liu, senior lecturer on international health at the Harvard School of Public Health, praised China’s successful efforts to boost its citizens’ insurance coverage from 30 percent in 2003 to about 95 percent in 2011. However, he wrote, the average Chinese health insurance benefit package is very limited, and there are significant inter-regional inequalities. Coverage, he wrote, should be “effective,” not just “nominal.”
