Exposures and Environmental Analyses Facility Core

Overview

The Exposures and Environmental Analyses Facility Core includes creating and assessing exposures. The Core has six components:

  1. Organic Chemistry Laboratory;
  2. Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory;
  3. Environmental Microbiological Laboratory;
  4. Aerosol Properties Laboratory;
  5. Metals/Aquatic Laboratory; and
  6. Inhalation Laboratory.

These laboratories support a broad range of Harvard NIEHS Center collaborative research, including environmental epidemiology, inhalation toxicology, toxicology, radiobiology, and industrial hygiene. Center grant funds will be used for equipment service contracts, system upgrades, and technical staff support. With an NIEHS Superfund grant, and contract support from the U.S. EPA and the private sector, we have advanced our laboratory capacity in the six areas listed above. We plan to maintain performance of the Core's equipment (described below), support technical staff in their development of analytical methods, and conduct inter-laboratory comparisons.

Specific aims of this Core are to:

  • Maintain critical equipment in working order to serve the research needs of Center faculty;
  • Facilitate participation of laboratories in intra- and inter-lab quality assurance programs;
  • Provide laboratory staff and Center faculty with flexibility to develop/adopt analytical methods and utilize exposure facilities; and
  • Provide training and supervision for doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists in their research.
