HSPH Responds to Haiti Earthquake

In a short period of time, a 7.0 earthquake devastated parts of Haiti on January 12, leaving tens of thousands dead and others struggling to survive. HSPH alumna Louise Ivers, MPH’05, was in Port-au-Prince when the quake struck. A doctor, Ivers was one of a number of HSPH community members who quickly joined relief efforts. Working with Harvard-affiliated Partners In Health and the University-wide Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI), faculty members and alumni are providing disaster relief expertise and critical medical care.

Harvard University has established an emergency relief fund to assist employees who have been directly affected by the tragedy unfolding in Haiti.

Mexico's Commissioner of Social Protection in Health Discussed Health Care Program at Lecture

As the U.S. Congress debates health care reform, Mexico has already instituted a universal health care program that is expected to cover millions of previously uninsured people by the year 2011, Salomón Chertorivski Woldenberg, the country’s National Commissioner of Social Protection in Health, told an HSPH audience on December 7 in Kresge G-3.

White House Gives Boost to National Mentoring Efforts, Led in Part by HSPH's Center for Health Communication

The President and First Lady Michelle Obama gave a tremendous boost January 20 to the national movement to recruit volunteer mentors to help transform the lives of America’s youth. Mentors and their mentees from across the country joined the President and Mrs. Obama at a White House event to highlight the value of mentoring and mark the 9th Annual National Mentoring Month.

New Ombudsperson for HSPH Announced

Melissa Brodrick has been appointed HSPH's new ombudsperson, effective February 1, 2010. Deans Julio Frenk, Jeffrey Flier, and Bruce Donoff made the announcement in an email on January 12, 2010.
