Scoopfest to Celebrate Summer
Save your appetites. The HSPH annual celebration of summer, Scoopfest, will take place on Wednesday, July 12, at 3 p.m. in the Kresge cafeteria. Faculty and staff are invited to partake of ice cream, free of charge.
Glimcher Honored with Several Awards
Laurie Glimcher, Irene Heinz Given Professor of Immunology, has recently received several awards. She also has just taken over leadership of the Division of Biological Sciences at HSPH.
Glimcher has been named the recipient of the American Association of University Women Founders Distinguished Senior Scholar Award. The award recognizes Glimcher's outstanding teaching, publication record, and impact on women in her profession and community.
She has also received the 2006 Dean's Award for Leadership in the Advancement of Women Faculty from Harvard Medical School (HMS). The award is sponsored by Dr. Joseph Martin as an annual event and is organized by the Joint Committee on the Status of Women at HMS and HSDM.
One of Glimcher's students, Wendy Garrett, has received a 2006 Damon Runyon postdoctoral fellowship from the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. The recipients are outstanding young scientists conducting theoretical and experimental research relevant to cancer. Garrett is focusing on colon cancer.
HSPH's Chickens Get 'Best Prop' Nod

The prop is on display in the Kresge Building
The rubber chickens that HSPH's graduating students tossed into the air at this year's Commencement got a "best prop" nod from Harvard Gazette reporters. The chickens were chosen to represent public health efforts to curb the spread of bird flu.
Three in Environmental Health Receive Award
Theodore Courtney and David Lombardi, both instructors in the Department of Environmental Health; Santosh Verma, a doctoral student in the department; and research scientists at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety were recently announced as co-recipients of the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Partnering Award for Worker Health and Safety. The award, presented by the NORA Liaison Committee and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recognized the researchers for their participation in a joint, multi-study research project on slips, trips, and falls among health care workers.
