Mosteller Service Scheduled

A memorial service honoring the life and work of pioneering statistician Frederick Mosteller will be held on November 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 136 Irving St., in Cambridge. Mosteller, former head of the HSPH Departments of Biostatistics and Health Policy and Management, passed away in July at the age of 89. A reception will follow the service.

Security Upgrade to Computers

Starting yesterday, the HSPH IT department began deploying a major security upgrade (called Service Pack 2) to Microsoft Windows XP computers throughout the School in order to help improve network security. Any computers in need of this patch will receive a pop_up message with instructions on how to install the patch. IT suggests that users do not begin the installation process until they are done working for the day because the upgrade will take from one to three hours. Before starting the installation process, users are advised to close all documents and applications. Computers will require a full-system restart after installation. Questions may be directed to the Help Desk at 432_HELP or by email at helpdesk@hsph.harvard.edu.

Registration Open for John B. Little Symposium

Register for the Ninth Annual John B. Little Symposium. This year's event will be held on November 3 and 4 in Snyder Auditorium. The theme is "The Environment or the Enemy Within? Cellular Mechanisms to Offset Genotoxic Threats."

The event is free of charge and has been organized by the John B. Little Center for Radiation Sciences and Evironmental Health. Little is James Stevens Simmons Professor of Radiobiology, Emeritus, in the Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases.
