More than 300 graduates, faculty, and students signed up for the HSPH alumni reception at APHA on Monday, November 6, at the Boston Convention Center - the biggest turnout ever at the annual meeting. The atmosphere was energetic and chatty. Robert Morris, chair of the Alumni Nominating Committee, MPH 86, announced two new members of the Alumni Council: Anthony Dias, MPH 05, and Ramona Lunt, MPH 74. Council President J. Jacques Carter greeted attendees, and Dean Barry Bloom provided a brief review of highlights from the School from the past year and an update on Allston planning.
In addition to the reception, HSPH alumni, faculty, and students were recognized at various events at APHA with awards:
- Alumnus Jonathan Fielding received the Sedgwick Memorial Medal for Distinguished Public Health-the oldest and most prestigious award given by APHA.
- Another alumnus, Adam Finkel, was given the David P. Rall Award for Advocacy in Public Health.
- Takemi fellow Naoki Kondo was recognized for research on mental health, capacity deterioration, and disability in older adults.
- Student Karen Ertel received an award for "Social integration predicts reduced memory decline in a nationally representative sample of US elderly."
- Professor Felton Earls was honored with the Rema Lapouse Award.
- Alumnus Hugh Tilson delivered the Wade Hampton Frost Lecture.
- Warren and Gretchen Berggren were honored with the John Gordon/John Wyon Award for Community-Based Public Health (a new award). At the same ceremony, student Bethany Hedt was honored for innovative work in biostatistics.
- Professor Richard Levins received the Milton Terris Global Health Award
- Professor R. Heather Palmer was recognized for her contributions to quality improvement methodologies with the Donabedian Award.
- Alumnus Saleh Rahman received the Early Career Award from the Public Health Education and Health Promotion group.
