HSPH Student Recognition Award

The HSPH Student Recognition Award honors an HSPH student who has demonstrated, through student activities and/or community service efforts, a commitment to excellence, leadership, volunteerism, and the highest ethical standards. While candidates may be peer-nominated or self-nominated, all nominees must submit the following statements: (1) a brief personal summary of student/community service activities for the academic year 2006-07, and (2) an essay (maximum 500 words) that describes the nominee's public health vision and how his or her activities for the year have exemplified this vision. Please submit all nominations to Heather Curtin in the Student Affairs Office (Kresge G-20) Wednesday, April 11, 2007. This award will be presented at an upcoming student event (tentatively the Class Party in late May). Students interested in serving on the committee to select the recipient of the Student Recognition Award should e-mail hcurtin@hsph.harvard.edu.

Deadline for nominations: April 11, 2007 - For nominations, submit a brief statement of why this person is being nominated; nominees will be notified and asked to submit additional materials.

April 20, 2007 - Deadline for each nominee's essay and summary of activities.

Gareth M. Green Award

The Division of Public Health Practice and the Office for Professional Education are pleased to announce the Gareth M. Green Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice for 2007. The award includes a plaque presented during the HSPH Commencement ceremony and a $500 prize. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday April 17, 2007.

The award is given in memory of Gareth M. Green, M.D., who served as Associate Dean for Professional Education from 1990 - 1998 and was the first chair of the Advisory Council of the Division of Public Health Practice at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Green practiced internal medicine and did pioneering work in infectious diseases and pulmonary medicine. A distinguished environmental health scientist and educator, Dr. Green came to HSPH in 1990. Dr. Green believed that public health practice was essential to professional training in public health. His commitment to the highest standards of excellence in training and research has provided significant guidance for our work.

The award recognizes the student or student team whose project in public health practice contributes to the improvement of health of a defined population and makes a significant contribution to the public health practice knowledge base. Nominations are welcome from faculty, administrators or students. Students, and/or student groups engaging in practice are also welcome to nominate themselves.

All graduating students regardless of degree program or department are eligible. Projects can be local, national, or international. Eligible projects for nomination must have been conducted for a course or directed study/tutorial during matriculation at HSPH and supervised by a faculty member.

Albert Schweitzer Award

The Albert Schweitzer Award is given annually to a graduating HSPH student whose past work and current activities have been marked by a "reverence for life" and who has sought, as expressed by Schweitzer, to "make my life my argument." The selection committee gives special emphasis to service activities undertaken by nominees during the course of their studies at HSPH. Nominations should be in the form of a letter, describing in detail the relevant work and qualities of the nominee. Please submit all nominations to Heather Curtin in the Student Affairs Office (Kresge G-20) by Friday, April 13, 2007. (Finalists will be asked to submit any additional information, such as a resume, by Friday, April 20, 2007.) Members of the selection committee will interview finalists. This award will be presented at the HSPH Commencement Ceremony.

Deadline for nominations: April 13, 2007

Blendon Honored with Mentoring Award

Robert Blendon, professor in the HSPH Department of Health Policy and Management, was one of three recipients of the Everett Mendelsohn Excellence in Mentoring Awards given at a reception last week. The award is bestowed each year by Harvard's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Graduate Student Council. The Council honors "faculty members who truly go out of their way to mentor graduate students, honoring them for efforts which often go unnoticed - but not unappreciated."

Blendon is a faculty member with the Harvard University Ph.D. Program in Health Policy, which is a collaborative program that includes HSPH and five other Harvard faculties. He also is a professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
